Chevening Scholarship Scheme
Academic Year 2010/2011
What is Chevening?
Chevening Scholarships are prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom.
The scholarships are named after Chevening House in Kent, the official country residence of the Foreign Secretary. They are available in more than 130 countries and around 1000 new Chevening Scholarships are awarded globally each year. Chevening scholarships offer an ideal opportunity for young, high-flying graduates not only to study their chosen subject, but also to meet and network with their peers in the unique learning atmosphere that the UK provides. The ultimate objective is to build a network of friends of the UK, who will be future leaders in their countries.
Candidates are selected by the British Embassy/British High Commission. The scheme is managed by the British Council, on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Scholarships
The Chevening scholarship scheme is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in the United Kingdom. Significant contributions are also made by UK higher education institutions, the private sector, other government departments and devolved administrations. The scheme is administered by the British Council, on behalf of the FCO, both in the UK and overseas. In 2007–08 higher education institutions continued to offer part-scholarships for Chevening Scholars studying on full-time taught postgraduate courses under the core scholarship scheme. Private sponsors overseas also contributed generously. Consequently, under the main scheme, 1,059 scholars were supported in their studies in the UK. The FCO, in partnership with higher education institutes and private sector participants, also fund a number of central partnerships, which resulted, in 2007–08, in a further 299 awards. This gives a total of 1,358 Chevening Scholarships for the whole year in addition to 31 continuing scholars from 2006–07.
Requirements
Chevening scholarships are prestigious awards and highly sought after by people from all over the world who want to make a difference. There are over 17,000 applications for about 1000 awards in 2009/10. A typical successful applicant is:
• You must not be a British Citizen (although dual nationals will be considered on a case by case basis).
• A graduate with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. These include:
- Influencing and communications skills, leadership track record, networking ability, ambition, plans for the future
- Intelligence, academic potential, drive, self management, strength of character, integrity, interests outside work
• Motivated to make a career that will take them to positions of leadership in their own country within 10 years of their scholarship
• Committed to networking to find global solutions
• Able to use their studies and experience in the UK to benefit themselves, their countries and the UK
Applicants must:
• Have good English Language skills and an IELTS score of 6.5 (or its equivalent) for admission to postgraduate courses
• Meet the academic requirements for their courses of study

2010 IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition
IEEE is proud to announce the launch of the 2nd annual Presidents’ Change the World contest. As a student who has previously expressed interest in participating, you will be glad to know that you can now submit your entry.
The Presidents’ Change the World contest competition recognizes students who develop unique solutions to real-world problems, using engineering, science, computing, and leadership skills to benefit their community or humanity.
First Prize: IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme – USD $10,000
Second Prize: IEEE Distinguished Student Humanitarian – US $5,000
Third Prize: IEEE Exceptional Student Humanitarian – US $2,500

Attached with this letter please find information about the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF), an outreach program of the World Bank Family Network. The fund provides financial assistance to women from developing countries during their studies in the United States or Canada . The MMMF annually awards about six to ten grants of approximately $12,000 each.
Included is a poster for display to inform students of this grant program.

The 2010 Ford Motor Company International Fellowship of the 92nd Street Y is now accepting applications from community leaders who are citizens and residents of Armenia , China , Czech Republic , Egypt , India , Israel , Laos , Mali , Russia and Slovakia . Applications must be postmarked or emailed by October 9, 2009 to be considered. This annual fellowship is funded by the Ford Motor Company and organized by the 92nd Street Y to provide education and support to community leaders engaged in the nonprofit sector. To date, 194 individuals from 54 countries have received the Ford Fellowship of the 92nd Street Y, which is entering its tenth year.
A successful applicant must demonstrate that he or she:
is a community leader engaged in the nonprofit sector, either professionally or as a volunteer;
is successfully addressing issues that affect the community’s well-being; and
would benefit from an intensive three-week nonprofit management training course in New York .
Previous Ford Fellows include:
a South African AIDS educator;
the president of a Jewish aid society facilitating Bosnia-Herzegovina’s transition to democracy;
a sustainable development expert from Zimbabwe ;
the founder of an Indian organization that educates women and children working in the silk industry; and
an Indonesian advocate for ethnic minorities.
The residency takes place Friday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in New York City . Airfare, accommodation, food, transportation, instruction, and other program-related expenses are included in the fellowship, and participants receive a small stipend upon arrival.
During the intensive three-week residency, Ford Fellows take classes in areas including nonprofit management strategy and leadership training at Columbia University ’s Picker Center for Executive Education. The academic curriculum is complemented by visits to model nonprofits in New York City and meetings with academic, business, and government leaders. The experience is enhanced by Fellows’ residency at the 92nd Street Y, the world’s first global Jewish community and cultural center. Founded in 1874 and considered a New York landmark, the 92nd Street Y annually serves over 300,000 people of all backgrounds, religions, nationalities, ethnicities, races, and socio-economic groups.

IEEE is proud to announce the launch of the 2nd annual Presidents’ Change the World contest. As a student who has previously expressed interest in participating, you will be glad to know that you can now submit your entry.
The Presidents’ Change the World contest competition recognizes students who develop unique solutions to real-world problems, using engineering, science, computing, and leadership skills to benefit their community or humanity.
First Prize: IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme – USD $10,000
Second Prize: IEEE Distinguished Student Humanitarian – US $5,000
Third Prize: IEEE Exceptional Student Humanitarian – US $2,500
Up to Five Outstanding Student Humanitarian prizes – US $1,000
The top three prizes will be awarded at the 2010 IEEE Honors Ceremony on 26 June 2010, in Montreal, Canada. The designated leader from each of the top three teams or individuals will be invited to attend and participate in this special IEEE event.

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Attached with this letter please find information about the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF), an outreach program of the World Bank Family Network. The fund provides financial assistance to women from developing countries during their studies in the United States or Canada . The MMMF annually awards about six to ten grants of approximately $12,000 each.
Included is a poster for display to inform students of this grant program.

The 2010 Ford Motor Company International Fellowship of the 92nd Street Y is now accepting applications from community leaders who are citizens and residents of Armenia , China , Czech Republic , Egypt , India , Israel , Laos , Mali , Russia and Slovakia . Applications must be postmarked or emailed by October 9, 2009 to be considered. Please distribute the attached brochures and applications to individuals you think would benefit from this wonderful opportunity.
This annual fellowship is funded by the Ford Motor Company and organized by the 92nd Street Y to provide education and support to community leaders engaged in the nonprofit sector. To date, 194 individuals from 54 countries have received the Ford Fellowship of the 92nd Street Y, which is entering its tenth year.
A successful applicant must demonstrate that he or she:
is a community leader engaged in the nonprofit sector, either professionally or as a volunteer;
is successfully addressing issues that affect the community’s well-being; and
would benefit from an intensive three-week nonprofit management training course in New York .
Previous Ford Fellows include:
a South African AIDS educator;
the president of a Jewish aid society facilitating Bosnia-Herzegovina’s transition to democracy;
a sustainable development expert from Zimbabwe ;
the founder of an Indian organization that educates women and children working in the silk industry; and
an Indonesian advocate for ethnic minorities.
The residency takes place Friday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in New York City . Airfare, accommodation, food, transportation, instruction, and other program-related expenses are included in the fellowship, and participants receive a small stipend upon arrival.
During the intensive three-week residency, Ford Fellows take classes in areas including nonprofit management strategy and leadership training at Columbia University ’s Picker Center for Executive Education. The academic curriculum is complemented by visits to model nonprofits in New York City and meetings with academic, business, and government leaders. The experience is enhanced by Fellows’ residency at the 92nd Street Y, the world’s first global Jewish community and cultural center. Founded in 1874 and considered a New York landmark, the 92nd Street Y annually serves over 300,000 people of all backgrounds, religions, nationalities, ethnicities, races, and socio-economic groups.
